Julia Pascal Biography
First woman to direct at the National Theatre on the South Bank.
Julia Pascal is a writer who grew up in the north of England. She trained as an actor and was also a journalist before starting her career as a playwright and theatre director. She was the first woman director at the National Theatre on the South Bank with her stage adaptation of Dorothy Parker’s prose and poetry.
Her body of dramas focuses on unrepresented voices, women, immigrants and refugees. She has written fifteen full length stage plays of which twelve have had major productions. Her work has been seen in the UK, Europe and in the US. Her scripts are published by Oberon Books and Samuel French (Inc) and Faber.
Awards include the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts. This was a Fellowship for her dramatic writing as well recognition from the Arts Council of England, the BBC Alfred Bradley Prize, Cockayne Grants for the Arts, The Moondance Columbine Prize, the Goethe Institute, the European Association for Jewish Culture and the Leverhulme Trust At The Wiener Library and the University of York she was a Writer in Residence. Pascal is a Selected playwright on Sphinx Theatre Company’s Open Call for Sphinx 30, 2020. She was a resident writer for Dyspla 2019
She is a member of the League of Professional Theatre Women (US).
Pascal’s plays have been produced at theatres including The Lyric Theatre, Riverside Studios, The Arcola Theatre, The Park Theatre, The Tricycle Theatre, New End Theatre, The Finborough Theatre, Edinburgh Festival. In New York she has presented work at Theatre for the New City and the Lincoln Centre’s Director’s Workshop. Productions of her texts have also been staged in Austria, France and Germany.
As a producer she has created large scale community projects funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Julia teaches Theatre MA at City University and St Lawrence University (USA) on the Study Abroad Program.
At King’s College, London University she is a Research Fellow.
